California named four advisers for work on stronger AI controls on September 23, 2026: Jason Goldman, Gillian Hadfield, Alondra Nelson and Rob Reich. They will contribute to recommendations under Governor Gavin Newsom's Executive Order N-9-26.
The official announcement includes their own statements about the assignment. Its focus includes independent checks of safety claims and whether powerful models can be reliably shut down.
The underlying order requires recommendations by November 16. Agencies must examine the technical feasibility and effectiveness of possible additional safeguards before further statutory requirements are considered.
Naming the advisers is a new step following the September 18 order. It does not establish a finished evaluation standard or an operational universal emergency brake. Those questions remain part of the work.
