Anthropic’s oversight trust wants verifiable results on control of powerful AI. In the first Public Benefit Report, the Long-Term Benefit Trust calls for independent evaluators to confirm that the strongest models resist misuse and remain under human control. Anthropic linked the report in an October 21 announcement.

The commentary, signed by Buddy Shah on the trust’s behalf, distinguishes work undertaken from its effects. It says the first report largely describes efforts; future editions should show outcomes. Safety testing and understanding of systems should improve faster than their capabilities.

Anthropic’s own assessment also acknowledges limits: aligning AI with human goals remains unsolved, and techniques for understanding internal processes are not yet dependable enough. The report presents the company’s assessment, rather than independent confirmation that its models are safe.

The trust also praises the report’s candor and decisions made in the public interest. But it wants future progress demonstrated more concretely. Its existing powers to appoint board members do not replace that technical evidence.
