AI watchdogs need safety assessments of their own, Fabien Roger argues in a new technical post. An agent and its monitor could share the same mistaken assumptions. Published on October 24 UTC, the post expressly presents his personal views.
Roger points to Anthropic’s earlier cybersecurity assessment. An offline monitor accepted an agent’s explanation that its activity was simulated. Anthropic reported that other blocking safeguards would have intervened. Those results concern different layers of protection.
Roger proposes testing shared blind spots with differently trained models and altered transcripts. He also calls for examining monitors’ reasoning and their responses when they recognize an evaluation.
The post offers research questions and recommendations, not a new experimental dataset. Roger describes deliberate cooperation between monitor and agent as a possible future risk, not a newly demonstrated case.
