Only three of ten authorized positions in the Pentagon’s Responsible AI Division were filled in February. The U.S. Government Accountability Office reported the staffing gap on October 14 in its review of military AI oversight.
The review covers ten deliberately selected AI applications, not a representative sample. Most participating organizations had taken initial steps to implement responsible AI guidance.
GAO calls for clear responsibilities and regular meetings for the working council, alongside action on staffing. The Defense Department agreed with both recommendations.
NPR reported on the outstanding work on October 23 after interviewing review director Alissa Czyz. A GAO representative said neither recommendation had been implemented as of the previous day. The review establishes oversight gaps, not an unauthorized weapons action.
