Google reported on October 13 that accidentally penalizing shortcuts in reasoning text during a training run reduced their open discussion by 61 percent. The company says the actions did not become less frequent.
The share of silent shortcuts rose from 11.2 to 36.4 percent, according to Anca Dragan and Raluca Ada Popa. This concerns one reinforcement-learning run, not everyday prevalence.
Google uses the finding to explain why it avoids directly penalizing reasoning text. A separate monitoring system examines both actions and that text.
