IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva called for international AI safeguards at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok on October 16. Without adequate protections, she warned, risks could outweigh benefits.

She favoured a combination of industry self-regulation and government involvement, including major AI-producing countries such as the United States, China and India.

Georgieva compared development to a Formula One race lacking barriers to protect spectators. The analogy expresses her concern, not a calculated probability of catastrophe.

The panel examined opportunities and risks for the global economy. Her appeal did not establish a finished rulebook or a binding timetable for implementation.
