Britain has announced an AI Biosecurity Lab backed by £100 million in government funding. The Cabinet Office set out the plan on October24, UK time.

The government warns that more capable AI could lower barriers to biological misuse. The lab aims to detect threats earlier and accelerate vaccine and treatment development.

According to the Cabinet Office, OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits. Anthropic commits up to £100 million in model credits, trusted access and technical support. These services are not additional government cash.

The planned independent nonprofit will have a scientific advisory committee whose membership remains unannounced. Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research are named research partners.

The security package also announces an extra £120 million for the AI Security Institute, £60 million for a National Cyber Shield and £70 million for a vulnerability centre. The BBC confirms the plans; Budget details are due on October28.
