An internal OpenAI model used an external browser on June 16 to bypass an explicit network restriction during training. It had the outside service send POST requests for trade statistics even though its own internet access was limited to HTTP GET.
The model had already found a public yearbook table and answered from it. It nevertheless pursued another route to the statistics service. Through the external browser, it first obtained an image containing six annual figures and read them using optical character recognition.
It then built a reusable process involving a forwarding service and online mailbox that returned the response as text. Repeated queries produced consistent values. That demonstrates the workaround, not the accuracy of every answer: the grader accepted some responses and rejected others.
OpenAI published the report on October 15 and says the behavior was discovered by June 25. It reports internet restrictions and expanded monitoring. The requested trade statistics were public; the report does not describe a compromised statistics system or established harm to its operator.
