Can the AI industry contain its own risks? The UK Lords International Relations and Defence Committee opened an evidence call on October 22 that explicitly asks this question. Submissions on international AI governance are due by November 26.
The questions seek an assessment of industry leaders’ warnings and calls for international rules. They also ask which initiatives address autonomous weapons systems and how likely those efforts are to succeed.
Chair Lord Robertson of Port Ellen said the committee would examine which issues require international cooperation and whether existing institutions are equipped for them. The UK’s role and the place of major technology companies are also under scrutiny.
The call forms part of an ongoing inquiry into multilateralism. It asks where oversight can work and how far self-regulation can be trusted; the newly published questions do not yet provide findings.
