New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin called for stronger legal AI safeguards after SpaceXAI testified on October 16. Company representative Gabriela Castillo Madrid appeared before the Technology Committee after the Council threatened court enforcement of its subpoena.

Menin said the answers raised further safety questions. Committee chair Carmen De La Rosa also cited the risk of AI acting outside human control and announced follow-up letters.

According to amNewYork's hearing report, Castillo Madrid said SpaceXAI was working on partnerships with independent evaluators. She could not provide the current number of staff dedicated specifically to AI safety and promised an answer.

The council members challenged industry self-regulation. What further information SpaceXAI will supply remains unresolved. The hearing and proposed evaluator partnerships do not establish that safeguards are effective.
